Parent, Coach, and Player Responsibilities

Parent and Guardian Responsibilities

Parents and guardians are responsible for:

  1. Arranging appropriate medical assessment when required
  2. Providing clear medical documentation to the team Trainer
  3. Ensuring the player follows all return-to-play restrictions
  4. Informing the team Trainer if symptoms return, worsen, or change
  5. Supporting the player’s safe recovery before returning to full participation
  6. Respecting the team Trainer’s participation decision

Parents and guardians should not ask coaches, managers, Board members, or other team officials to override the team Trainer’s return-to-play decision.

Coach and Manager Responsibilities

Coaches and managers are responsible for:

  1. Supporting the team Trainer’s player safety decisions
  2. Ensuring removed players do not return without Trainer approval
  3. Following all participation restrictions
  4. Avoiding pressure on players, parents, or Trainers to speed up return to play
  5. Confirming with the team Trainer before allowing a player to return to contact practice or game play
  6. Referring parent concerns about medical decisions back to the team Trainer

Coaches and managers do not approve return to play.

Player Responsibilities

Players are responsible for:

  1. Reporting symptoms honestly
  2. Telling the team Trainer if symptoms return or worsen
  3. Following participation restrictions
  4. Not hiding injuries to stay in a game or practice
  5. Completing return-to-play steps as directed
  6. Respecting Trainer decisions about safety

A player who hides symptoms or returns before they are ready may increase their risk of further injury.

Questions or Concerns

If a parent, player, coach, or Trainer is unsure whether a player can safely participate, the player should not participate until the issue has been clarified.

Questions about concussion protocol, injury documentation, or return-to-play requirements should be directed to the team Trainer.

If further support is required, the team Trainer may contact the Trainer Coordinators for guidance on Trainer Program processes, documentation requirements, communication concerns, or escalation.
